2. Since I got here, I've found my mind transformed into someone who wasn't me and made choices I wouldn't make twice in as many months, while still on the ship. Even if I trusted your resolve, that wouldn't guarantee my safety.

3. Even if I knew for an incontrovertible fact that you would never hurt me again, seeing you would still be an uncomfortable reminder of the desperate, burning animal panic of suffocation.

In conclusion: yes, if I'm going to allow myself to visit, it is necessary. If it is any comfort, I would not have bothered to ask unless I thought you decent enough to care, and I wasn't wrong. A regularly scheduled absence would be much appreciated.

Perhaps an hour a day? It does matter when as long as it's not right in the middle of ship's night.

English is a complex language without adding the fact that many words have different meanings depending on context and culture. Many of the things said imply entirely different and apparently completely arbitrary other things. I don't know how or why one would expect any other being who is not socialized to understand these various meanings to be able to apply them or draw them from a conversation.
